Ramipril, sold under the brand nameAltaceamong others, is anACE inhibitortype medication used to treathigh blood pressure,heart failure, anddiabetic kidney disease.It can also be used as a preventative medication in patients over 55 years old to reduce the risk of having a heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular death in patients shown to be at high risk, such as some diabetics and patients with vascular disease.It is a reasonable initial treatment for high blood pressure.It is taken by mouth.
Common side effects include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and cough.Serious side effects may include liver problems,angioedema,kidney problems, andhigh blood potassium.Use inpregnancyandbreastfeedingis not recommended.It is anACE inhibitorand works by decreasingrenin-angiotensin-aldosterone systemactivity.
Ramipril was patented in 1981 and approved for medical use in 1989.It is available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 211th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 2million prescriptions.
⚠️ Warnings
•It may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting; alcohol, hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. Get up slowly from bed.
• It may cause a serious side effect called angioedema with symptoms of swelling of the hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; difficulty swallowing or breathing; or hoarseness.
• It may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely.
• Monitor kidney function before and during treatment.
• Regular monitoring of white blood cells in patients with vascular collagen disorders is recommended.
• Use with caution in patients with history of an allergic reaction which included swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat (angioedema). Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, liver disease, high blood levels of potassium, heart problems, severe dehydration (and loss of electrolytes such as sodium), diabetes (poorly controlled), strokes, blood vessel disease (e.g., collagen vascular diseases such as lupus, scleroderma) and children.
