Propylthiouracil(PTU) is a medication used to treathyperthyroidism.This includes hyperthyroidism due toGraves' diseaseandtoxic multinodular goiter.In athyrotoxic crisisit is generally more effective thanmethimazole.Otherwise it is typically only used when methimazole, surgery, andradioactive iodineis not possible.It is takenby mouth.
Common side effects include itchiness, hair loss, parotid swelling, vomiting, muscle pains, numbness, and headache.Other severe side effects includeliver problemsandlow blood cell counts.Use during pregnancy may harm the baby.Propylthiouracil is in theantithyroidfamily of medications.It works by decreasing the amount ofthyroid hormoneproduced by thethyroid glandand blocking the conversion ofthyroxine(T4) totriiodothyronine(T3).
Propylthiouracil came into medical use in the 1940s.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of bone marrow depression; or liver disease, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause drowsiness or dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• Patient may develop with increased risk of liver damage and bone marrow depression; if it is so consult with your doctor.
• It may affect platelet counts; avoid bruising or injury.
