Your doctor should check your progress at regular visits to make sure that Flucytosine is not causing unwanted effects.
Flucytosine may cause blood problems. These problems may result in an increased risk of infection, slow healing, and bleeding of the gums. Therefore, you should take care when using regular toothbrushes, dental floss, and toothpicks.
Whenever possible, dental treatment should be completed before starting Flucytosine or delayed until blood counts return to normal.
Speak to your doctor or dentist if you have any questions about proper oral hygiene (mouth care) during treatment.
Flucytosine may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight than usual.
Exposure to sunlight, even for brief periods, may cause skin irritation, itching, redness or other skin discolouration, or severe sunburn.
When you start taking Flucytosine:
– Stay out of direct sunlight, especially between 10:00 and 15:00, if possible.
– Wear protective clothing, including a hat. Also, wear sunglasses.
– Apply a sunscreen product with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.
Some patients may need a product with a higher SPF number, especially if they have fair skin.
If you have any questions about this, check with your healthcare professional.
– Apply a lip balm with at least SPF 15 protection.
– Do not use sunlamps or tanning beds. If you have a severe reaction to sunlight, speak to your doctor.
Flucytosine may also cause some people to become dizzy, light-headed, drowsy, or less alert than normal.
Make sure you know how you react to the effects of Flucytosine before driving, using machines, or performing tasks that could be dangerous if you are dizzy or less alert. If these reactions are particularly troublesome, speak to your doctor.
