Oxymetazoline is an active substance from the sympathomimetic group, approved in the form of decongestant nasal sprays or drops for the short-term treatment of rhinitis, sinusitis, and eustachian tube catarrh. It decongests the mucous membrane, constricts blood vessels, facilitates breathing, and inhibits nasal discharge. Possible adverse effects include local reactions such as dry nasal mucosa. Prolonged use may lead to rhinitis medicamentosa.
Oxymetazoline (ATC R01AA05) has direct sympathomimetic properties, constricts blood vessels, and produces decongestant effects on the mucous membrane. It is effective against nasal discharge and nasal congestion. The effect lasts for approximately 12 hours. According to the scientific literature, it is also reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and even antiviral properties (manufacturer's study).
