Duloxetine, sold under the brand nameCymbaltaamong others,is a medication used to treatmajor depressive disorder,generalized anxiety disorder,obsessive–compulsive disorder,fibromyalgia,neuropathic pain,central sensitization, and other types of chronic pain.It is takenby mouth.
Duloxetine is aserotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor(SNRI).The precise mechanism for itsantidepressantandanxiolyticeffects is not known.
Common side effects includedry mouth,nausea,constipation, loss of appetite,drowsiness,sexual problems, andincreased sweating.In some patients, sexual dysfunction may persist even after the drug is discontinued, a condition known aspost-SSRI sexual dysfunction.Severe side effects include an increased risk ofsuicide,serotonin syndrome,mania, andliver problems.Antidepressant withdrawal syndromemay occur if stopped.Use during the later part ofpregnancymay increase the risk of bleeding or cause complications for the fetus.
Duloxetine was approved for medical use in the United Statesand the European Union in 2004.It is available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 31st most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 18million prescriptions.
