Mycophenolic acidis animmunosuppressant medicationused to preventrejectionfollowingorgan transplantationand to treatautoimmune conditionssuch asCrohn's diseaseandlupus.Specifically it is used followingkidney,heart, andliver transplantation.It can be given by mouth or by injection into a vein.It comes asmycophenolate sodiumandmycophenolate mofetil.
Common side effects include nausea, infections, and diarrhea.Other serious side effects include an increased risk ofcancer,progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy,anemia, andgastrointestinal bleeding.Use during pregnancy may harm the baby.It works by blockinginosine monophosphate dehydrogenase(IMPDH), which is needed bylymphocytesto makeguanosine.
Mycophenolic acid was initially discovered by ItalianBartolomeo Gosioin 1893.It was rediscovered in 1945 and 1968.It was approved for medical use in the United States in 1995 following the discovery of its immunosuppressive properties in the 1990s.It is available as ageneric medication.In 2022, it was the 227th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 1million prescriptions.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of cancer, kidney or liver disease, stomach problems, genetic disorders, any allergy, immunity problem, who are taking other medications, recent vaccination, elderly, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• Proper birth control measures should be taken while taking this medication.
• Patient may develop with increased risk of certain types of cancer, if it so consult with your doctor immediately.
