Paclitaxel, sold under the brand nameTaxolamong others, is achemotherapy medicationused to treatovarian cancer,esophageal cancer,breast cancer,lung cancer,Kaposi's sarcoma,cervical cancer, andpancreatic cancer.It is administered byintravenousinjection.There is also analbumin-bound formulation.
Common side effects includehair loss,bone marrow suppression,numbness,allergic reactions,muscle pains, anddiarrhea.Other side effects include heart problems, increased risk of infection, andlung inflammation.There are concerns that use during pregnancy may causebirth defects.Paclitaxel is in thetaxanefamily of medications.It works by interference with the normal function ofmicrotubulesduringcell division.
Paclitaxel was isolated in 1971 from thePacific yewand approved for medical use in 1993.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.It has been made from precursors, and throughcell culture.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of viral infection, HIV infection, heart, liver or kidney problems, bone marrow depression, any allergy, who are taking other medications, elderly, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause dizziness or vision changes, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• Avoid alcohol consumption.
• It may reduce platelet counts; avoid injury or bruising.
