Common side effects include nausea, increased saliva, crampy abdominal pain, andslow heart rate.More severe side effects includelow blood pressure, weakness, andallergic reactions.It is unclear if use inpregnancyis safe for the fetus.Neostigmine is in thecholinergicfamily of medications.It works by blocking the action ofacetylcholinesteraseand therefore increases the levels ofacetylcholine. Neostigmine was patented in 1931.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.The term is from Greekneos, meaning "new", and "-stigmine", in reference to the alkaloid,physostigmine, which inspired its design.It is available as ageneric medication.
