Nicotinamide(INN,BANUK) orniacinamide(USANUS) (IUPAC name:3-pyridinecarboxoamide) is a form ofvitamin B3found in food and used as adietary supplementand medication. As a supplement, it is usedorally(swallowed by mouth) to prevent and treatpellagra(niacin deficiency). This is not to be confused withniacin. While both are very similar, they have different behaviors on the body. Whilenicotinic acid(niacin) may be used for this purpose, nicotinamide has the benefit of not causingskin flushing. As a cream, it is used to treatacne, and has been observed in clinical studies to improve the appearance of aging skin by reducinghyperpigmentationand redness. It is awater-soluble vitamin.
Clinical trials have show promise in eye health, in this B3 form, it has shown promise in protecting eye health, particularly in the context ofglaucoma. It is believed to support the health ofretinal ganglion cellsand may help protect against glaucoma-related damage. Nicotinamide has been studied for its potentialneuroprotectiveeffects. While someclinical trialshave demonstrated improvements in visual fields andretinalfunction, it is not yet approved for the treatment of glaucoma. The use of nicotinamide should be approached with caution, especially at high doses, due to the risk ofliver injury. Ongoing research continues to explore the full potential of nicotinamide in eye protection and its role in managing eye conditions.
Side effects are minimal. At high doses, liver problemsmay occur.Normal amounts are safe for use duringpregnancy.Nicotinamide is in thevitamin Bfamily of medications, specifically thevitamin B3complex.It is anamideof nicotinic acid.Foods that contain nicotinamide includeyeast, meat, milk, andgreen vegetables.
Nicotinamide was discovered between 1935 and 1937.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.Nicotinamide is available as ageneric medicationandover the counter.Commercially, nicotinamide is made from eithernicotinic acid(niacin) ornicotinonitrile. In some countries, grainshave nicotinamide added to them.
Extraterrestrial nicotinamide has been found incarbonaceous chondritemeteorites.
