Procaineis alocal anestheticdrug of theamino estergroup. It is most commonly used indental proceduresto numb the area around a toothand is also used to reduce the pain ofintramuscular injectionofpenicillin. Owing to the ubiquity of thetrade nameNovocain(without the "e" in the original German patent) orNovocaine(with the "e" in the US patent), in some regions, procaine is referred togenericallyasnovocaine. It acts mainly as asodium channel blocker.Today, it is used therapeutically in some countries due to itssympatholytic,anti-inflammatory,perfusion-enhancing, andmood-enhancingeffects.[failed verification]
Procaine was first synthesized in 1905,shortly afteramylocaine. It was created by the chemistAlfred Einhornwho gave the chemical the trade name Novocain, from theLatinnov-(meaning "new") and-caine, a common ending foralkaloidsused as anesthetics. It was introduced into medical use by surgeonHeinrich Braun.
Prior to the discovery ofamylocaineand procaine, cocainewas a commonly used local anesthetic.Einhorn wished his new discovery to be used for amputations, but for this surgeons preferredgeneral anesthesia. Dentists, however, found it very useful.
