Bumetanide, sold under the brand nameBumexamong others, is amedicationused to treatswellingandhigh blood pressure.This includes swelling as a result ofheart failure,liver failure, orkidney problems.It may work for swelling when other medications have not.For high blood pressure it is not a preferred treatment.It is taken by mouth, or byinjection into a veinormuscle.Effects generally begin within an hour and last for about six hours.
Common side effects include dizziness,low blood pressure,low blood potassium,muscle cramps, andkidney problems.Other serious side effects may includehearing lossandlow blood platelets.Blood tests are recommended regularly for those on treatment.Safety duringpregnancyandbreastfeedingis unclear.Bumetanide is aloop diureticand works by decreasing the reabsorption of sodium by the kidneys.
Bumetanide was patented in 1968 and came into medical use in 1972.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.It is available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 243rd most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 1million prescriptions.
