It is a highly addictiveand commonlyabused drug.It is usually takenorally, and is available inimmediate-releaseandcontrolled-releaseformulations.Onset ofpain relieftypically begins within fifteen minutes and lasts for up to six hours with the immediate-release formulation.In the United Kingdom, it is available byinjection.Combination productsare also available withparacetamol(acetaminophen),ibuprofen,naloxone,naltrexone, andaspirin. Common side effects includeeuphoria,constipation,nausea,vomiting,loss of appetite,drowsiness,dizziness,itching,dry mouth, andsweating.Side effects may also includeaddictionanddependence,substance abuse,irritability,depressionormania,delirium,hallucinations,hypoventilation,gastroparesis,bradycardia, andhypotension.Those allergic tocodeinemay also be allergic to oxycodone.Opioid withdrawalmay occur if rapidly stopped.Oxycodone acts by activating theμ-opioid receptor.When taken by mouth, it has roughly 1.5 times theeffect of the equivalent amountofmorphine. Oxycodone was originally produced from theopium poppyopiate alkaloidthebainein 1916 in Germany. One year later, it was used medically for the first time in Germany.Oxycodone is a therapeutic alternative on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.It is available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 49th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 13million prescriptions.A number of abuse-deterrent formulations are available, such as incombination with naloxoneornaltrexone.
