Edaravone, sold under the brand nameRadicavaamong others, is amedicationused to treat stroke andamyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS).It is given byintravenous infusionandby mouth.
The mechanism by which edaravone might be effective is unknown.The medication is known to be an antioxidant, andoxidative stresshas been hypothesized to be part of the process that kills neurons in people with ALS and in stroke victims.
The most common side effects include bruising (contusions), problems walking (gait disturbances), and headaches.
The U.S.Food and Drug Administration(FDA) considers it to be afirst-in-class medication.
⚠️ Warnings
• Emergency medical help is needed when a severe allergic reaction occurs with symptoms of itching,
wheezing
, and swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat.
• It should be used with caution in asthmatic patients as it contains sodium bisulfite, and asthmatic patients often exhibit sulfite sensitivity
