Hydroxycarbamide, also known ashydroxyurea, is anantimetabolitemedication used insickle-cell disease,essential thrombocythemia,chronic myelogenous leukemia,polycythemia vera, andcervical cancer.In sickle-cells disease it increasesfetal hemoglobinand decreases the number of attacks.It is taken by mouth.
Commonside effectsincludebone marrow suppression, fevers, loss of appetite,psychiatric problems,shortness of breath, andheadaches.There is also concern that it increases the risk of latercancer.Use duringpregnancyis typically harmful to the fetus.Hydroxycarbamide is in theantineoplasticfamily of medications. It is believed to work by blocking the making ofDNA.
Hydroxycarbamide was approved for medical use in the United States in 1967.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.Hydroxycarbamide is available as ageneric medication.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of AIDS, who have undergone radiation therapy, liver or kidney disease, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may reduce platelet counts; avoid injury or bruising.
• It may be harmful if it gets on the skin; avoid direct contact with hands.
• Avoid vaccination while taking this medication.
