Cyclobenzaprine, sold under several brand names including, historically,Flexeril, is amuscle relaxerused formuscle spasmsfrommusculoskeletalconditions of sudden onset.It is not useful incerebral palsy.It is takenby mouth.
Common side effects includeheadache, tiredness, dizziness, and dry mouth.Serious side effects may include anirregular heartbeat.There is no evidence of harm in pregnancy, but it has not been well studied in this population.It should not be used together withMAOIs.How it works is unclear.In any case, it is known toinhibitserotoninandnorepinephrinereuptakeand toblockserotonin,adrenergic,histamine, andmuscarinic acetylcholine receptors.Chemically, it is very similar totricyclic antidepressantslikeamitriptyline.
Cyclobenzaprine was approved for medical use in the United States in 1977.It is available by prescription as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 47th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 13million prescriptions.It was not available in the United Kingdom as of 2012.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of overactive thyroid, heart disease, increased eye pressure, difficulty in urinating, liver problems, cerebral palsy, brain or spinal cord disease, stroke, any allergy, who are taking other medications, elderly, children, during pregnancy and breast feeding.
• It may cause drowsiness, dizziness or blurred vision, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• Avoid alcohol consumption.
• It may cause heat stroke, maintain your body in cool.
