Ofloxacinis aquinolone antibioticuseful for the treatment of a number ofbacterial infections.When takenby mouthorinjection into a vein, these includepneumonia,cellulitis,urinary tract infections,prostatitis,plague, and certain types ofinfectious diarrhea.Other uses, along with other medications, include treatingmultidrug resistant tuberculosis.Aneye dropmay be used for asuperficial bacterial infection of the eyeand anear dropmay be used forotitis mediawhen a hole in theear drumis present.
When taken by mouth, common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and rash.Other serious side effect includetendon rupture, numbness due to nerve damage,seizures, andpsychosis.Use inpregnancyis typically not recommended.Ofloxacin is in thefluoroquinolonefamily of medications.It works by interfering with the bacterium'sDNA.
Ofloxacin was patented in 1980 and approved for medical use in 1985.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.Ofloxacin is available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 169th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 2million prescriptions.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of joint problems, rheumatoid arthritis, heart, kidney, or lung transplant; Alzheimer disease, seizures, stroke, central nervous system disorder, heart, liver, or kidney disease, decrease in blood minerals, any allergy, who are taking other medications, children, elderly, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or light-headedness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• Avoid exposure to sunlight.
• It may affect blood sugar level; monitor sugar level regularly.
• Avoid alcohol consumption.
• Avoid long-term use of this medication; otherwise it may cause secondary infection.
