Heparin, also known asunfractionated heparin(UFH), is a medication and naturally occurringglycosaminoglycan. It is one of the most studiedsulfated polysaccharides.
Heparin is a bloodanticoagulantthat increases the activity ofantithrombin. It is used in the treatment ofheart attacksandunstable angina. It can be givenintravenouslyor byinjection under the skin. Its anticoagulant properties make it useful to prevent blood clotting in blood specimentest tubesandkidney dialysis machines.
Common side effects include bleeding, pain at the injection site, andlow blood platelets.Serious side effects includeheparin-induced thrombocytopenia.Greater care is needed in those withpoor kidney function.
Heparin is contraindicated for suspected cases ofvaccine-induced pro-thrombotic immune thrombocytopenia(VIPIT) secondary toSARS-CoV-2vaccination, as heparin may further increase the risk of bleeding in an anti-PF4/heparin complex autoimmune manner, in favor of alternative anticoagulant medications (such asargatrobanordanaparoid).
Heparin appears to be relatively safe for use duringpregnancyandbreastfeeding.Heparin is produced bybasophilsandmast cellsin allmammals.
The discovery of heparin was announced in 1916.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.Afractionatedversion of heparin, known aslow molecular weight heparin, is also available.
