Olmesartan, sold under the brand nameBenicaramong others, is amedicationused to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).It is takenorally(swallowed by mouth).Versions are available as the combinationolmesartan/hydrochlorothiazideandolmesartan/amlodipine.It is available as aprodrug, olmesartan medoxomil.
Common side effects include dizziness,headaches,diarrhea, and back pain.Serious side effects may includekidney problems,low blood pressure, andangioedema.Use inpregnancymay harm the fetus and use whenbreastfeedingis not recommended.It is anangiotensin II receptor antagonistand works by blocking the effects ofangiotensin II.
It was patented in 1991 and came into medical use in 2002.It is available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 96th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 7million prescriptions.
