Loperamide, sold under the brand nameImodium, among others,is amedicationof theopioid receptor agonistclass used to decrease the frequency ofdiarrhea.It is often used for this purpose inirritable bowel syndrome,inflammatory bowel disease,short bowel syndrome,Crohn's disease, andulcerative colitis.Loperamide is takenby mouth.
Common side effects includeabdominal pain,constipation,sleepiness,vomiting, anddry mouth.It may increase the risk oftoxic megacolon.Loperamide's safety inpregnancyis unclear, but no evidence of harm has been found.It appears to be safe inbreastfeeding.It is anopioidwith no significant absorption from the gut and does not cross theblood–brain barrierwhen used at normal doses.It works by slowing the contractions of theintestines.
Loperamide was first made in 1969 and used medically in 1976.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.Loperamide is available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 276th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 800,000 prescriptions.
