Meropenem, sold under the brand nameMerremamong others, is anintravenouscarbapenemantibioticused to treat a variety ofbacterial infections.Some of these includemeningitis,intra-abdominal infection,pneumonia,sepsis, andanthrax.
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, headache, rash, and pain at the site of injection.Serious side effects includeClostridioides difficileinfection,seizures, andallergic reactionsincludinganaphylaxis.Those who are allergic to otherβ-lactam antibioticsare more likely to be allergic to meropenem as well.Use in pregnancy appears to be safe.It is in thecarbapenemfamily of medications.Meropenem usually results inbacterial deaththrough blocking their ability to make acell wall.It is resistant to breakdown by many kinds ofβ-lactamaseenzymes, produced by bacteria to protect themselves from antibiotics.
Meropenem was patented in 1983.It was approved for medical use in the United States in 1996.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.The World Health Organization classifies meropenem as critically important for human medicine.
⚠️ Warnings
•Caution needed for patients with history of hypersensitivity to carbapenem, pencillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics; infants <3 months; kidney malfunction, neurological disorders, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
• Not recommended for use in MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infections.
