Benzocaine, sold under the brand nameOrajelamongst others, is alocal anesthetic, belonging to theamino esterdrug class, commonly used as atopicalpainkilleror incough drops. It is theactive ingredientin manyover-the-counteranestheticointmentssuch as products fororal ulcers. It is combined withantipyrineto formA/B ear drops. In the US, products containing benzocaine for oral application are contraindicated in children younger than two years old.
It was first synthesised in 1890 in Germany and approved for medical use in 1902.
⚠️ Warnings
•Caution should be exercised in elderly, debilitated, child, pregnancy, epilepsy, impaired cardiac conduction or respiratory function, shock or liver impairment, myasthenia gravis patients.
• Avoid applying this drug to large areas of the skin or middle ear. Do not eat or drink for a minimum of 3 to 4. hours after using the anesthetic for mouth conditions. Do not rub or touch the eye after application into the eye.
• Chemical burns must be neutralized before treatment with this medication.
