Estriol is well-toleratedand produces relatively fewadverse effects.Side effects may includebreast tenderness,vaginal discomfortanddischarge, andendometrial hyperplasia.Estriol is anaturally occurringandbioidenticalestrogen, or anagonistof theestrogen receptor, thebiological targetofestrogenslikeendogenousestradiol.It is an atypical and relatively weak estrogen, with much lowerpotencythanestradiol.When present continuously at adequate concentrations however, estriol produces fullestrogeniceffects similarly to estradiol.
Estriol was first discovered in 1930,and was introduced for medical use shortly thereafter.Estriol esterssuch asestriol succinateare also used.Although it is less commonly employed than other estrogens like estradiol andconjugated estrogens, estriol is widely available for medical use inEuropeand elsewhere throughout the world.
