Argosulfan is a topical antibacterial cream containing silver sulfathiazole 20 mg/g (2%). The active substance is a silver salt of sulfathiazole that combines two antibacterial mechanisms: silver ions exert direct bactericidal activity by binding bacterial cell-wall and membrane proteins, denaturing nucleic acids and disrupting the respiratory chain, while sulfathiazole, a sulfonamide, competitively inhibits bacterial dihydropteroate synthase, blocking folate synthesis required for nucleic-acid biosynthesis. ATC class D06BA02 (chemotherapeutics for topical use, sulfonamides). The combination provides broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Proteus, Klebsiella and Enterobacter, as well as some anaerobes and fungi.
⚠️ Warnings
Avoid extensive application on large open burns without monitoring blood counts, hepatic function and renal function. Wash hands after each application; avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Discontinue immediately if severe rash, blistering, or systemic hypersensitivity develops — sulfonamides can cause Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Caution in patients with bone marrow disorders, G6PD deficiency, hepatic or renal impairment, porphyria, and asthma. Avoid in late pregnancy (kernicterus risk in neonate) and breast-feeding. Sun protection of treated skin is recommended (photosensitivity). Long-term use over large areas may cause cosmetically apparent skin discolouration.
