Capecitabine, sold under the brand nameXelodaamong others, is ananticancer medicationused to treatbreast cancer,gastric cancerandcolorectal cancer.For breast cancer it is often used together withdocetaxel.It is takenby mouth.
Common side effects include abdominal pain, vomiting,diarrhea, weakness, and rashes.Other severe side effects include blood clotting problems,allergic reactions, heart problems such ascardiomyopathy, andlow blood cell counts.Use duringpregnancymay result in harm to the fetus.Capecitabine, inside the body, is converted to5-fluorouracil(5-FU) through which it acts.It belongs to the class of medications known asfluoropyrimidines, which also includes5-FUandtegafur.
Capecitabine was patented in 1992 and approved for medical use in 1998.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of heart, liver or kidney disease, any allergy, bone marrow problems, pain, redness, swelling, tingling, tenderness of the palms and soles, who are taking other medications, elderly, children, during pregnancy and lactation.
• Avoid vaccination while taking this medication.
• It may cause dizziness or drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• It may reduce platelet counts; avoid bruising or injury.
• Monitor blood counts and blood electrolytes while taking this medication.
