Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, sold under the trade namesBactrim,Cotrim(a short form of theBritish Approved Name,Co-trimoxazole) andSeptra, among others, is afixed-dose combinationantibioticmedication used to treat a variety ofbacterial infections.It consists of one parttrimethoprimto five partssulfamethoxazole.It is used to treaturinary tract infections,methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) skin infections,travelers' diarrhea,respiratory tract infections, andcholera, among others.It is used both to treat and preventpneumocystispneumoniaandtoxoplasmosisin people withHIV/AIDSand other causes of immunosuppression.It can be givenorally(swallowed by mouth) orintravenous infusion(slowly injected into a vein with an IV).
