Doxycyclineis abroad-spectrumantibioticof thetetracycline classused in the treatment of infections caused bybacteriaand certainparasites.It is used to treatbacterial pneumonia,acne,chlamydia infections,Lyme disease,cholera,typhus, andsyphilis,and is sometimes used to preventmalaria.Doxycycline may be takenby mouthorintravenously.
Common side effects includediarrhea,nausea,vomiting,abdominal pain, and an increased risk ofsunburn.Use during pregnancy is not recommended.Doxycycline can be used in children of all ages, including for Lyme disease and rickettsial infections.Like other agents of thetetracycline class, it slows or kills bacteria by inhibitingprotein production.It killsPlasmodium—microorganisms associated withmalaria—by targeting aplastid organelle, theapicoplast.
Doxycyclinepost-exposure prophylaxis(doxyPEP) is also used to preventsexually transmitted infections, particularly inmen who have sex with men, and is supported byCDCguidelines.
Doxycycline was patented in 1957 and came into commercial use in 1967.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.Doxycycline is available as ageneric medicine.In 2023, it was the 77th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 8million prescriptions.
