Chlorphenamine(CP,CPM), also known aschlorpheniramine, is anantihistamineused to treat the symptoms ofallergic conditionssuch asallergic rhinitis(hay fever).It is takenorally(by mouth).The medication takes effect within two hours and lasts for about 4–6 hours.It is afirst-generation antihistamineand works by blocking thehistamine H1receptor.
Common side effects include sleepiness, restlessness, and weakness. Other side effects may includedry mouthand wheeziness.
Chlorpheniramine was patented in 1948 and came into medical use in 1949.It is available as ageneric medicationandover the counter.
In 2023, it was the 318th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 200,000 prescriptions.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, or other breathing problems, hypertension, increased eye pressure, ulcers, prostate enlargement, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, or an overactive thyroid gland, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause dizziness or drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
