Aspargin is an oral tablet combination of potassium hydrogen aspartate 250 mg and magnesium hydrogen aspartate 250 mg, providing 17 mg of elemental Mg2+ and 54 mg of elemental K+ per tablet. The aspartate anion serves as an effective intracellular ion shuttle, increasing tissue uptake of K+ and Mg2+ — particularly into cardiomyocytes and skeletal muscle — relative to inorganic salts. Both cations are essential for the resting membrane potential, action-potential repolarisation, neuromuscular transmission, ATP-dependent enzymatic activity, and cardiac conduction stability. ATC class A12CX (other mineral supplements). Aspargin is widely used in cardiology and general medicine as an adjunctive supplement during diuretic therapy and to correct mild combined K+/Mg2+ deficits.
⚠️ Warnings
Monitor plasma K+, Mg2+ and creatinine in patients with renal impairment or RAAS-blocker / potassium-sparing therapy. Take after meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Ensure adequate hydration. Avoid concomitant unsupervised potassium supplementation. Severe symptomatic deficits require parenteral correction rather than oral therapy. Pregnancy and breast-feeding: considered safe at recommended doses. Reduce dose or discontinue if hyperkalaemia symptoms develop.
