Butamirate is an antitussive agent used for the symptomatic treatment of dry cough. It is not related to opioids such as codeine. Its effects are based on a central mechanism of action. Non-sustained-release dosage forms are usually administered three to four times daily before meals. Possible adverse effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, diarrhoea, and skin rash.
