Acetazolamide, sold under the trade nameDiamoxamong others, is a medication used to treatglaucoma,epilepsy,acute mountain sickness,periodic paralysis,idiopathic intracranial hypertension(raised brain pressure of unclear cause),heart failureand to alkalinize urine.It may be used long term for the treatment ofopen angle glaucomaand short term foracute angle closure glaucomauntil surgery can be carried out.It is takenby mouthorinjection into a vein.Acetazolamide is a first generationcarbonic anhydraseinhibitor and it decreases the ocular fluid andosmolalityin the eye to decrease intraocular pressure.
Common side effects include numbness,ringing in the ears, loss of appetite, vomiting, and sleepiness.It is not recommended in those with significantkidney problems,liver problems, or who areallergic to sulfonamides.Acetazolamide is in thediureticandcarbonic anhydrase inhibitorfamilies of medication.It works by decreasing the formation ofhydrogen ionsandbicarbonatefrom carbon dioxide and water.
Acetazolamide came into medical use in 1952.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.Acetazolamide is available as ageneric medication.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of kidney stones, sickle cell anemia, lung diseases, increased eye pressure, respiratory problem, elderly, who are taking other medications, any allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause dizziness, drowsiness or vision changes, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• Limit alcoholic beverages.
• Avoid exposure to sunlight.
• Monitor blood sugar, complete blood cell count regularly while taking this medication.
• This medication should not be used in children less than 12 because it may affect normal growth.
• Caution is advised for patients receiving concomitant high-dose aspirin and acetazolamide, as anorexia, tachypnea, lethargy, coma and death have been reported.
