Ciprofloxacinis afluoroquinoloneantibioticused to treat a number ofbacterial infections.This includes bone andjoint infections, intra-abdominal infections, certain types ofinfectious diarrhea,respiratory tract infections, skin infections,typhoid fever, andurinary tract infections, among others.For some infections it is used in addition to other antibiotics.It can be takenby mouth, as eye drops, as ear drops, or intravenously.
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.Severe side effects includetendon rupture,hallucinations, andnerve damage.In people withmyasthenia gravis, there is worsening muscle weakness.Rates of side effects appear to be higher than some groups of antibiotics such ascephalosporinsbut lower than others such asclindamycin.Studies in other animals raise concerns regarding use inpregnancy.No problems were identified, however, in the children of a small number of women who took the medication.It appears to be safe duringbreastfeeding.It is a second-generation fluoroquinolone with abroad spectrum of activitythat usually results in thedeath of the bacteria.
Ciprofloxacin was patented in 1980 and introduced by Bayer in 1987.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.The World Health Organization classifies ciprofloxacin as critically important for human medicine.It is available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 155th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 3million prescriptions.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of stomach infection, liver problems, brain or nervous system problems, increased pressure in the brain, rregular heartbeat, Alzheimer disease, blood vessel problems, muscle problems (eg, myasthenia gravis), history of seizures, heart, kidney or lung transplants, any allergy, who are taking other medications, elderly, children, during pregnancy and breast feeding.
• It may cause drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision or lightheadedness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• Take full course of treatment.
• Avoid alcohol consumption.
• It may affect blood sugar level, monitor sugar level regularly.
• Avoid exposure to sunlight.

Patient may develop with increased risk of Tendinopathy and Tendon Rupture, hepatotoxicity, suicidal thoughts, and Peripheral Neuropathy.
