2-Ethylhexyl salicylate, also known asethylhexyl salicylate(INCIname),octisalate, oroctyl salicylate, is anorganic compoundused as an ingredient insunscreensand cosmetics to absorb UVB (ultraviolet) rays from the sun.It is anesterformed by the condensation ofsalicylic acidwith2-ethylhexanol. It is a colorless oily liquid with a slight floral odor.
The salicylate portion of the molecule absorbs ultraviolet light, protecting skin from the harmful effects of exposure tosunlight. The ethylhexanol portion is afatty alcohol, addingemollientand oil-like (water resistant) properties.
