Pharmacotherapeutic group: Antispasmodics; ATC code: A03BB01
Buscopan has a spasmolytic effect on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal, urogenital, and biliary tract. Hyoscine butylbromide is a quaternary ammonium derivative that does not cross into the central nervous system. Therefore, central anticholinergic adverse effects do not occur. Its peripheral anticholinergic effect results from ganglionic blockade in the visceral wall and antimuscarinic activity.
