Memantine is an active substance belonging to the group of NMDA antagonists, used for the symptomatic treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. The medication is titrated gradually and can be taken independently of meals. The most common possible adverse effects include headache, somnolence, dizziness, constipation, elevated blood pressure, and dyspnoea.
Memantine (ATC N06DX01) is a voltage-dependent, non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist of moderate affinity. Sustained excitation of the central nervous system by glutamate at the NMDA receptor may contribute to the symptomatology of Alzheimer's disease.
