Edaravone - Indications, Dosage, Side Effects and Precautions

Edaravone is prescribed for treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a motor neuron disease or Lou Gehrig’s disease that causes the death of the nerve cells responsible for voluntary muscle contraction.‍‍‍‍‍‍​​​‍​​​​​​ This causes the muscles to become weak and leads to paralysis. The exact mechanism of action of edaravone is not known. It probably works as an antioxidant, that is, it slows down the rate of nerve damage by reducing the oxidative stress.
