Acodin 150 Junior is a paediatric oral syrup combining dextromethorphan hydrobromide 7.5 mg with dexpanthenol 50 mg per 5 mL. Dextromethorphan is a centrally acting non-opioid antitussive — a sigma-1 receptor agonist and NMDA receptor antagonist that elevates the cough reflex threshold in the medullary cough centre without the respiratory depression or analgesia of opioids. Dexpanthenol, the alcohol analogue of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), is included as a soothing co-ingredient that supports mucosal hydration and epithelial repair in the upper airway. ATC class R05DA09. The product is intended for short-term symptomatic suppression of dry, non-productive cough in children, where suppression of the cough reflex is clinically appropriate.
⚠️ Warnings
Do not exceed the recommended dose — high-dose dextromethorphan abuse causes dissociative effects, tachycardia and respiratory depression. Use with caution in children with chronic respiratory disease, hepatic impairment, or atopic disposition. The syrup contains sucrose / sorbitol — caution in fructose intolerance and diabetes mellitus (review label for content per dose). Avoid use in children with cough productive of mucus, where expectoration is therapeutically required. Cross-reactivity with codeine is not pharmacological but care is advised in opioid-sensitive patients. CYP2D6 polymorphism affects exposure: poor metabolisers have higher plasma concentrations and increased adverse-effect risk; ultra-rapid metabolisers may have reduced efficacy.
