Barnidipine (pure S,S isomer) is a calcium antagonist belonging to the class of lipophilic 1,4-dihydropyridines, which exhibits high affinity for calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells.
The receptor kinetics of barnidipine are characterised by a slow onset of action and a strong, prolonged receptor binding.
The reduction in peripheral resistance caused by barnidipine results in a decrease in blood pressure.
When using barnidipine, the antihypertensive effect is maintained throughout the entire 24-hour dosing interval.
Chronic use of barnidipine does not lead to an increase in heart rate.
The impact of barnidipine on cardiovascular morbidity or mortality has not been studied. However, recently completed controlled studies with other long-acting dihydropyridines indicate similar beneficial effects on morbidity and mortality compared to other antihypertensives in elderly hypertension.
⚠️ Warnings
Pregnancy
Pregnancy:
Barnidipine may be used during pregnancy only if the benefits justify the potential risk to the foetus.
Driving
Driving:
No studies on the effects on the ability to drive and use machines have been performed with barnidipine. However, caution should be exercised due to the possible occurrence of dizziness/vertigo during antihypertensive therapy.
Breast-feeding
Breast-feeding:
Breast-feeding is not recommended during the use of barnidipine.
Take special care:
– if you have kidney disease.
– if you have heart disease.
Should not be administered to children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
