This medication is an analogue of vasopressin, prescribed for bleeding esophageal varices, septic shock, hepatorenal syndrome and in management of low blood pressure. It regulates the body's retention of water by acting to increase water absorption in the kidney.

Abdominal cramps, chest pain, abnormal heart rhythm, nausea, headache, transient blanching and increased arterial pressure.

• Caution should be exercised in patients with high blood pressure, asthma, hardening of the arteries, heart disease, liver disease, conditions that may be aggravated by water retention, e.g. heart failure.
