Levocetirizine, sold under the brand nameXyzal, among others, is a second-generationantihistamineused for the treatment ofallergic rhinitis(hay fever) and long-termhivesof unclear cause.It is less sedating than older antihistamines.It is takenby mouth.
Common side effects include sleepiness, dry mouth, cough, vomiting, and diarrhea.Use inpregnancyappears safe but has not been well studied and use whenbreastfeedingis of unclear safety.It is classified as a second-generation antihistamine and works by blockinghistamine H1-receptors.
Levocetirizine was approved for medical use in the United States in 2007,and is available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 158th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 3million prescriptions.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of kidney or liver disease, any allergy, who are taking other medications, elderly, children, during pregnancy and breast-feeding.
• It may cause drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• Avoid alcohol consumption.
