Lachnanthesis a genus ofmonocotyledonousplants in thebloodwort familycontaining only one species, i.e.,Lachnanthes caroliana(caroliniana),commonly known asCarolina redrootorbloodroot.The plant is native to easternNorth America, from southeasternNova Scotia(especially theMolega Lakearea)andMassachusettsin the north, south toFloridaandCuba, and west along theGulf of MexicotoLouisiana. It has also been reported from an island in the westernCaribbeanoff the coast ofHonduras.It prefers wet, acidic, usually sandy soils, restricting it to various wetland habitats such as bogs, pinelands,hammocksandpocosins, among others.
The plant's common name is based on its red roots andrhizomes. Its flowers, consisting of six pale yellowtepals, emerge from mid to late summer. The plant is sometimes a significant weed in commercialcranberrybogs.
