Dexpanthenol, the active substance in Bepanthen Plus, is rapidly converted within skin cells into pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) and therefore exerts the same effect as the vitamin.
Pantothenic acid is a component of the essential coenzyme A (CoA). In the form of acetyl coenzyme A, CoA plays a central role in the metabolism of all cells. Pantothenic acid is indispensable to the body for the formation and regeneration of skin and mucous membranes.
Chlorhexidine dihydrochloride is a well-known and well-tolerated antiseptic and bactericidal compound active against Gram-positive bacteria, with notable sensitivity of Staphylococcus aureus, an organism implicated in many skin infections. Activity against Gram-negative pathogens is somewhat less pronounced.
Certain species of Pseudomonas and Proteus are entirely resistant. Chlorhexidine demonstrates negligible antifungal activity and is inactive against viruses.
⚠️ Warnings
Avoid contact with the eyes, ears and mucous membranes.
Bepanthen Plus should not be used on skin injuries or irritations that do not present a risk of infection (e.g. sunburn). In such cases, products containing dexpanthenol alone are recommended:
Bepanthen cream, which has an aqueous composition, spreads easily and is rapidly absorbed, and is also suitable for the care of weeping wounds, hair-bearing areas and the most exposed areas of skin (such as the face, elbows and hands).
Rare but serious allergic reactions or anaphylaxis may occur with the use of products containing chlorhexidine. If signs of a serious allergic reaction develop (breathing difficulties, wheezing, facial swelling, rapidly worsening urticaria, extensive rash or shock), use of the product must be discontinued immediately and medical attention sought.
Bepanthen Plus contains cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol and wool fat.
Cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol and wool fat may cause local skin reactions (e.g. contact dermatitis).
