Bepanthen Plus is a topical dermatological cream combining dexpanthenol 50 mg/g (5%) with chlorhexidine dihydrochloride 5 mg/g (0.5%). Dexpanthenol, the alcohol analogue of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), is rapidly converted in the skin to pantothenic acid, an essential precursor of coenzyme A required for keratinocyte proliferation, fibroblast activity and re-epithelialisation; it also provides a humectant and barrier-restoring effect. Chlorhexidine dihydrochloride is a broad-spectrum cationic biguanide antiseptic that disrupts bacterial cell membrane integrity and provides bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, with weaker activity against fungi and lipid-enveloped viruses. ATC class D08AC02 (chlorhexidine, combinations). The combination provides simultaneous superficial antisepsis and wound-healing support.
⚠️ Warnings
Avoid eyes, ears with perforated tympanic membrane, and central nervous system tissue. Discontinue if hypersensitivity reaction develops — chlorhexidine anaphylaxis is rare but can be life-threatening, particularly in patients with prior hypersensitivity exposure. Do not apply to deeply infected or extensively contaminated wounds. Pregnancy and breast-feeding: topical use at recommended doses is considered safe; remove residue before breast-feeding to avoid infant ingestion. Paediatric: use cautiously on extensive surface area in young infants because of immature percutaneous absorption. Lanolin-containing formulations may sensitise atopic skin.
