Fluconazoleis anantifungal medicationused for a number offungal infections.These includecandidiasis,blastomycosis,coccidioidomycosis,cryptococcosis,histoplasmosis,dermatophytosis, andtinea versicolor.It is also used to prevent candidiasis in those who are at high risk such as followingorgan transplantation, low birth weight babies, and those withlow blood neutrophil counts.It is given either by mouth or byinjection into a vein.
Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, rash, andincreased liver enzymes.Serious side effects may includeliver problems,QT prolongation, andseizures.Use during pregnancy may increase the risk ofmiscarriageorbirth defects.Fluconazole is in theazole antifungalfamily of medication.It is believed to work by affecting the fungalcellular membrane.
Fluconazole was patented in 1981 and came into commercial use in 1988.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.Fluconazole is available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 175th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 2million prescriptions.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of cancer, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), irregular heartbeat, heart, kidney or liver disease, alcoholism, any allergy, who are taking other medications, elderly, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• Rarely it may cause liver damage; monitor liver function tests regularly while taking this medication.
• Avoid long-term use of this medication; otherwise it may cause secondary infection.
