Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, rash, andincreased liver enzymes.Serious side effects may includeliver problems,QT prolongation, andseizures.Use during pregnancy may increase the risk ofmiscarriageorbirth defects.Fluconazole is in theazole antifungalfamily of medication.It is believed to work by affecting the fungalcellular membrane. Fluconazole was patented in 1981 and came into commercial use in 1988.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.Fluconazole is available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 175th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 2million prescriptions.
