Betaxolol is an active substance belonging to the group of selective beta-blockers, used in the form of eye drops for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure. Its effects are thought to be based on a reduction in aqueous humour secretion. During treatment, it must be noted that the active substance can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Therefore, adverse effects may occur, affecting the respiratory tract and the cardiovascular system, among others.
Betaxolol (ATC C07AB05, ATC S01ED02) lowers intraocular pressure. Since it is β1-selective, i.e. cardioselective, it may be better tolerated with regard to pulmonary side effects than non-selective beta-blockers applied to the eye. Competing products such as carteolol or timolol are non-selective.
