Pantoprazole, sold under the brand nameProtonix, among others, is a medication used for the treatment ofstomach ulcers, short-term treatment oferosive esophagitisdue togastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD), maintenance of healing of erosiveesophagitis, and pathological hypersecretory conditions includingZollinger–Ellison syndrome.It may also be used along with other medications to eliminateHelicobacter pylori.Pantoprazole is aproton-pump inhibitor(PPI) and its effectiveness is similar to that of other PPIs.It is availableby mouthand byinjection into a vein.
Common side effects include headaches,diarrhea, abdominal pain, andjoint pain.More serious side effects may includesevere allergic reactions, a type of chronic inflammation known asatrophic gastritis,Clostridioides difficilecolitis,low magnesium, andvitamin B12 deficiency.Use in pregnancy appears to be safe.Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that decreasesgastric acidsecretion.It works by inactivating(H+/K+)-ATPasefunction in the stomach.
The study of pantoprazole began in 1985, and it came into medical use in Germany in 1994.It is available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the thirteenth most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 37million prescriptions.In Australia, it was one of the top 10 most prescribed medications between 2017 and 2023.
⚠️ Warnings
•Long-term therapy may lead to bacterial overgrowth in the GI tract, atrophic gastritis.
Monitor liver function regularly (if enzymes increase, discontinue) because it may lead to liver damage.
Caution needed during pregnancy; not recommended in children <18 year.

Patient may develop with increased risk of Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea (CDAD).
