Phenprocoumon(marketed under the brand namesMarcoumar,MarcumarandFalithrom) is a long-actinganticoagulantto be taken by mouth, and acoumarin derivative.It acts as avitamin K antagonistand inhibitsblood clotting(coagulation) by blocking synthesis ofcoagulation factorsII, VII, IX and X. It is used for theprophylaxisand treatment ofthromboembolicdisorders such asheart attacksandpulmonary (lung) embolism. The most common adverse effect is bleeding. The drug interacts with a large number of other medications, includingaspirinandSt John's Wort. It is the standard coumarin used in Germany,Austria,and other European countries.
