Flucytosine, also known as5-fluorocytosine(5-FC), is anantifungal medication.It is specifically used, together withamphotericin B, for seriousCandidainfectionsandcryptococcosis.It may be used by itself or with other antifungals forchromomycosis.Flucytosine is usedby mouthand byinjection into a vein.
Common side effects includebone marrow suppression, loss of appetite,diarrhea, vomiting, andpsychosis.Anaphylaxisand otherallergic reactionsoccasionally occur.It is unclear if use inpregnancyis safe for the baby.Flucytosine is in the fluorinatedpyrimidine analoguefamily of medications.It works by being converted intofluorouracilinside the fungus, which impairs its ability tomakeprotein.
Flucytosine was first made in 1957.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.It is not available in much of thedeveloping world.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of bone marrow or blood problems, kidney impairment, who are taking other medications, any allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause dizziness or drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• It may reduce platelet counts; avoid injury or bruising.
• Monitor complete blood cell counts, kidney and liver function tests, and blood electrolyte levels regularly while taking this medication.Avoid exposure to sunlight.
