Common side effects includesleepiness,dizziness,increased appetite, andweight gain.Serious side effects may includemania,low white blood cell count, and increasedsuicideamong children.Withdrawalsymptoms may occur when stopping.It is not recommended together with amonoamine oxidase inhibitor,although evidence supporting the danger of this combination has been challenged.It is unclear if use duringpregnancyis safe.How it works is not clear, but it may involveblockingcertainadrenergicandserotonin receptors.Chemically, it is atetracyclic antidepressant,and is closely related tomianserin. It also has strongantihistaminergiceffects. Mirtazapine came into medical use in the United States in 1996.The patent expired in 2004, andgenericversions are available.In 2023, it was the 99th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 6million prescriptions.
