Propranololis a medication of thebeta blockerclass.It is used to treathigh blood pressure, some types ofirregular heart rate,thyrotoxicosis,capillary hemangiomas,akathisia,performance anxiety, andessential tremors,as well as to preventmigraine headaches, and to prevent further heart problems in those withanginaor previousheart attacks.It can be takenorally,rectally, or byintravenous injection.The formulation that is taken orally comes in short-acting and long-acting versions.Propranolol appears in the blood after 30 minutes and has a maximum effect between 60 and 90 minutes when taken orally.
Commonside effectsincludenausea,abdominal pain, andconstipation.It may worsen the symptoms ofasthma.Propranolol may causeharmful effectsfor the fetus if taken duringpregnancy;however, its use duringbreastfeedingis generally considered to be safe.It is a non-selective beta blocker which works by blockingβ-adrenergic receptors.
Propranolol was patented in 1962 and approved for medical use in 1964.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.Propranolol is available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 69th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 9million prescriptions.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of heart, lung, liver or kidney disease, poor blood circulation, breathing problems, sugar, low blood sugar, overactive thyroid, increased eye pressure, any allergy, who are taking other medications, elderly, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, or vision changes, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• Avoid alcohol consumption.
• It may affect blood sugar level; monitor sugar level regularly while taking this medication.
