It is acoordination complexofplatinumthat is used as achemotherapy medicationused to treat a number ofcancers.These includetesticular cancer,ovarian cancer,cervical cancer,bladder cancer,head and neck cancer,esophageal cancer,lung cancer,mesothelioma,brain tumorsandneuroblastoma.It is given byinjection into a vein. Common side effects includebone marrow suppression,hearing problemsincluding severe hearing loss,kidney damage, andvomiting.Other serious side effects include numbness, trouble walking,allergic reactions,electrolyte problems, andheart disease.Use during pregnancy can cause harm to the developing fetus.Cisplatin is in theplatinum-based antineoplasticfamily of medications.It works in part by binding to DNA and inhibitingits replication.
